Linen Care

Caring for Your Fine Linens

Ensuring the longevity and luxury of your linens requires proper care and washing. All of our linens include manufactures instructions for care, but below are some general guidelines to keep your items fresh and fabulous:

Linens

  • Wash your sheets in cold water on gentle cycle before putting them on your bed. Expect approximately 3% shrinkage.
  • Wash with a gentle detergent (we recommend Le Blanc Linen Wash or The Laundress Whites Detergent).
  • Dilute your detergent in the water before putting any fabric in the washer. Never apply soap/detergent directly to fabrics while still dry.
  • Avoid using bleach or fabric softeners as these can damage the cotton fibers.
  • Dry on low heat. High heat “cooks” the yarn and resulting in shrinkage and loss of softness.
  • Remove sheets promptly to prevent wrinkling. If desired, press linens while slightly damp on the reverse side of the fabric using a steam iron on the hot/warm setting.

*CAUTION: some facial creams and cleansers, as well as body lotions contain ingredients such as peroxide, bleaching agents, oils or acids. These agents may cause discoloration upon laundering. We recommend white sheets and towels for clients using any of the above products.

Matelassé Coverlets & Quilts

  • Follow manufactures instructions carefully if you choose to wash on your own. We do recommend professional laundering because of the size, weight and delicate nature of these linens.
  • Take your matelassé to a professional cleaner and ask for a “cold block press.” This properly air dries the piece to maintain its shape and quality.
  • Dry clean any matelassé containing linen or silk fibers.

Towels and Bath Rugs

  • Wash your towels in cold water on gentle cycle prior to use. We recommend adding one cup of vinegar to the water in the machine to help remove factory finishes and to help set the color.
  • Dry on low heat and promptly remove towels from dryer. Egyptian cotton does become softer and more absorbent over time if washed properly

Additional Laundering Tips:

  • Iron all your table and bed linens while they are still damp
  • If a piece is embroidered iron on the reverse side.
  • Give both your washing machine and your iron a monthly vinegar bath.
  • Home laundering is recommended for almost all household linens. Only dry clean when indicated on the label.
  • We encourage the use of white towels or pillow cases for those of you who use any oxidizing lotions and or acne products.
  • Linen softens and wrinkles less as it ages.
  • Washing in warm water, over drying, and poor - quality dyes are common reasons for the loss of color in fabrics.
  • Fresh stains are the easiest to remove. Heat permanently sets stains, so make sure they are completely gone before placing in a dryer.
